Pune: India's melody queen Lata Mangeshkar on Friday said she wanted to see BJP leader Narendra Modi as prime minister, adding "I hope our wishes on Diwali comes true".
Modi had come to Pune to inaugurate a new hospital complex named after her late father Dinanath Mangeshkar.
The 84-year-old singer was effusive in her praise of Modi. "Narendrabhai is like my brother. All of us want to see him become the Prime Minister. On the auspicious occasion of Diwali, I hope our wishes would come true."
Modi, on his part, lauded the Mangeshkar family saying they had, "with their divine voices, delighted crores of people making them stress-free with music and making their minds and bodies healthy".
The Congress and Janata Dal (United) on Saturday tried to play down the significance of Lata Mangeshkar's open support to Modi.
Janata Dal (United) leader Shivanand Tiwari said: "I respect Lata Mangeshkar from my heart, I have grown old listening to her songs but it is not her fault as many people are fooled by BJP and Modi."
Congress party spokesperson Bhakta Charan Das said: "Lata Mangeshkar is respected all over the country. Congress party respects her. I don’t understand why if she says something the whole country should take note of that."
