Omne trium perfectum. Or as the Latin used to say, the best things in life come in threes. Little surprise it is that some of the best Hollywood movies are trilogies. We compile a list of the best ever movie trilogies.
1. Lord of the Rings

With a budget of $281 million and box office returns of $2.92 billion - and some of the most memorable characters in the fantasy genre of Hollywood, 'Lord of the Rings' is easily one of the best trilogies ever - all thanks to J.R.R. Tolkien's talent and Peter Jackson's vision.
2. The Bourne Trilogy
© Universal Pictures
The next on this list is another adaptation from a book series. Jason Bourne, Robert Ludlum's brainchild, gets into one adventure after another in this epic trilogy. Even though Jeremy Renner replaced Matt Damon in the fourth installment 'The Bourne Legacy', we are going to consider just Damon as Bourne. Deal with it.
3. The Dark Knight Trilogy
© Warner Bros.
Christopher Nolan's gift to humanity in the form of the Dark Knight trilogy will forever be remembered by the entire Batman fandom. From 'Batman Begins' and 'The Dark Knight' to 'The Dark Knight Rises' - the series has given us some amazing performance and characters. And no, we still think Christian Bale IS the real Batman.
4. The Godfather Trilogy

When it comes to mafia movies, Francis Ford Coppola has given moviegoers a classy trilogy that will be watched and adored generations later. The three movies received 29 nominations, out of which it won nine!
5. The Matrix Trilogy
© Warner Bros.
When it comes to sci-fi, the 'Matrix' trilogy is definitely the winner. So popular was this offering of the Wachowski Brothers that it got made into comic books, anime and video games.
6. Star Wars Episode IV-VI
© Lucasfilm
Another sci-fi movies that fans would probably vote up much higher on this list is the original 'Star Wars' trilogy. Entire fandoms and media franchises have spawned from this creation of George Lucas.
7. Toy Story Trilogy
© Pixar Animation Studios
There have been a number of animated movie trilogies in the recent past, but none come close to the 'Toy Story' trilogy. The movies also went ahead to be incorporated into animated series, plays, video games and short films! The adventures of Woody and Buzz Lightyear performed extraordinarily well at the BO.
8. The Vengeance Trilogy
© Egg Films
Even though this is a Korean trilogy, the dubbed versions were released in the US in a box set, and the pure brilliance of the movies begets a mention on this list. 'Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance', 'Oldboy' and 'Sympathy for Lady Vengeance' together made for a gripping revenge tale.
9. The Dollars Trilogy
© Produzioni Europee Associati (PEA)
Sergio Leone's vision and Clint Eastwood's extraordinary performance made for one of the most revered Western movie trilogies ever - 'A Fistful of Dollars', 'For a Few Dollars More' and 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'. Interestingly, Leone had never planned for these movies to be a trilogy when he first started out.
10. Three Colors
© MK2 Productions
This might come as a surprise for cinephiles grown up on a strictly Hollywood fare, but the French-Polish trilogy 'Three Colors' - 'Blue', 'White' and 'Red' have to be watched to be appreciated. Each movie name is one color of the French flag, and deals with the three French ideals as theme respectively - liberty, equality and fraternity.
