The Group of Ministers (GOM) constituted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is all set to give a green signal to Jat community in the Centre's OBC list.
Sources confirmed toindiatoday.inthat soon GOM will refer the matter to the Cabinet to take a final call. Sources also confirmed that political consensus already exists in the party and even Core Group, a top decision making body has given a nod to this issue.
For Congress, the decision had become all the more binding after riots in Muzzafarnagar where the trends showed that powerful Jat community was slowly drifting towards BJP. On top of it, NDA's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi too has been vocal and blunt in wooing OBC in his rallies in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
As per the procedure, if Cabinet gives a green signal, the note would be sent to National Commission of Backward Classes (NCBC), a statutary body. NCBC has the mandate to include or exclude any community from its schedule. Sources also confirmed that surveys on social and economic conditions of the community is also being completed at a break-neck speed. Though there were dissenting voices in the GOM who felt that Jats do not deserve reservation as they yeild both economic and political weight in north India.
