errible acts of crime have troubled the citizens as well as the judicial system of India since time immemorial. These crimes were so atrocious that they can put humanity to shame and render the feeling of safety null and void. But as a nation, we have displayed utmost levels of courage and helped the judicial system bring justice to the victims. Remembering those innocents who lost their lives, here are 7 crimes that shook India and changed the Indian judicial system forever.

1) Noida Serial Murders (Nithari Kaand) - 2005-2006

For over two consecutive years, as many as 17 children were kidnapped from the village of Nithari (Noida) and surrounding areas. After extensive investigations, Surinder Koli-the domestic help employed at the infamous house D5-Nithari-was held as the culprit. The following confessions by him shook the entire nation. Koli confessed to have killed 6 children, performing inhuman sexual acts with the corpses and eating parts of the dead bodies. For his insane crimes, Koli was given a death sentence for 6 brutal murders, extreme acts of cannibalism and necrophilia. While Koli was hung to death, the owner of the house Moninder Singh Pandher is still under scrutiny and can also be given a death sentence if found guilty. 11 of the 17 murders till date remain a mystery and the case has been classified as the "rarest of the rare" by the court.

2) Delhi Rape Case - December 16, 2012

On the night of December 16, 2012, six men including a minor tricked Nirbhaya and her male friend to board an off-duty charted bus heading towards their destination. What followed puts humanity to shame. Not only had the 6 men taken turns to rape the innocent girl, but inflicted unbearable amounts of pain by beating her up with iron rods and forceful penetration using a rusty L-shaped wheel jack handle. In the gruesome crime, Nirbhayasuffered serious injuries to her abdomen, intestines and genitals, and finally succumbed to a more than painful demise. The crime outraged the entire country and protests swept across the nation asking for justice. Four of the six rapists have been given death sentences. However, the juvenile's (also the most notorious one) case is still under scrutiny.

3) Neeraj Grover Case - 2008

Neeraj Grover was brutally murdered by Lieutenant M.L. Jerome Mathew and his soon to be fiancée Maria Susairaj in Mumbai. When Lieutenant Jerome found his girlfriend Maria Susairaj in bed with media executive Neeraj Grover, in a fit of rage he stabbed Neeraj with a 9 inch knife, immediately killing him. Soon after, both Maria and Jerome chopped Grover in what was reported into 300 small pieces, stuffed them in big black poly bags before finally setting the bags ablaze in a forest near Mumbai. After aggressive investigations, Maria confessed that Jerome had murdered Neeraj. While Jerome is serving 10 years imprisonment for murder, Maria got released after serving a 3-year sentence for destroying evidence.

4) Naina Sharma Murder Case (Tandoor Case) - 1995

On 2nd July 1995, congress youth leader and MLA Sushil Sharma shot his wife Naina, chopped her body into pieces and in an attempt to destroy the evidence, tried burning the body in a tandoor. Sushil Sharma suspected her wife Naina to be involved in an illicit relationship with a fellow congress worker called Matloob Karim. On the fateful night of 2nd July, upon returning home Sushil found Naina consuming alcohol while speaking on the phone. Shocked on seeing Sushil, Naina hung up the phone but it didn't take Sushil long to indentify who was she speaking with. In a spurt of extreme rage, he shot her twice in the head and dragged the body to a nearby restaurant. There he chopped her body and tried burning it in a tandoor. Sushil is currently serving a life sentence which was commuted from a prior death sentence.

5) Nitish Katara Murder Case - 2002

In a proven case of honor killing, Nitish Katara was brutally murdered by politician D.P. Yadav's son, Vikas Yadav. Nitish had an affair with Bharti Yadav, the sister of Vikas. Although the couple was in a 4-year-long relation, Vikas Yadav never approved their love. During a mutual friend's wedding where Nitish was also present, Vikas took Nitish for a drive and murdered him. According to reports, Nitish was beaten so badly by Vikas that his digestive system had fallen apart and a DNA test was conducted for identification. Vikas is presently serving a life sentence.

6) Aarushi Murder Case - 2008

The Aarushi murder case till date remains the most mysterious criminal case in the Indian judicial system. The whole story behind the crime is so confusing that it's simply hard to put it in a few words. According to the latest court verdict, Aarushi was murdered by her parents Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar when they discovered Aarushi's illicit relationship with their domestic help Hemraj. Hemraj was also murdered on the same night as Aarushi by Rajesh Talwar. The autopsy revealed that Aarushi's head was smashed using a golf club and her throat slit using a kukri.

7) Jessica Lal Murder Case - 1999

Jessica Lal was shot dead in the middle of a crowded high profile socialite party in Delhi on April 30, 1999. The whole ruckus started when Manu Sharma, the son of then congress MP Venod Sharma asked for drinks way past after the bar had shut, to which Jessica simply denied. Enraged with Jessica for not giving him alcohol, he open-fired at Jessica in the middle of the party. The controversial case went on for almost 10 years during which witnesses to the crime were threatened by Manu's family and a whole lot of political pressure was exerted. But ultimately, final justice was sought on December 20, 2006 when Manu was sentenced to life imprisonment.
