Generally the only way to be the sole provider for a good or service is to have the government step in and regulate and license and only allow one entity to control that portion of the market. In a free market government has no such jurisdiction and you better believe that there would always be someone else trying to compete with your prices for that particular good or service. It would be an extremely rare instance where a truly free market would have only one business providing a certain service or product without someone trying to undercut them. That's why the free market actually is the best for providing people with the best quality stuff for the cheapest prices. Competition. When there is no competition then the product becomes stagnant in development and the prices either stay the same or inflate because there is no one else to keep them in check to keep the people interested in their brand
Depends on the day. Sirius radio was not given permission to broadcast unless they had a competitor. A few investors formed XM radio as a generic version just to get an FCC license for sirius. It took a few years but they paid the right people and the companies merged.
