Supreme Court tells Campa Cola residents to vacate flats by May 31 2014

Residents of unauthorised flats in Campa Cola compound in Mumbai have to vacate premises by May 31, 2014, the Supreme Court said in an order on Tuesday. The apex court order by the bench headed by Justice G.S. Singhvi came after Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati informed the court that no specific proposal can be given to find an alternate solution.

The court also directed the occupants of the illegally constructed flats to give an undertaking within six weeks to vacate their houses by the given time.

In course of the last hearing, the court had asked Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati to suggest a proposal in consultation with the affected flat owners of the Campa Cola society. On Nov 13, the Supreme Court suspended till May next year demolition of the illegal flats in the Campa Cola Society minutes after the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) bulldozers, acting on another order of another apex court bench, moved in to pull down the flats.

Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati told the apex court that no specific proposal could be worked out for enabling new construction in the compound. The apex court added that the BMC will be free to proceed with against those who do not file the undertaking to comply with the May 31 deadline.
