12 Most Inspirational Pictures Taken When ‘Humans of New York’ Was In India

It’s long been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. However, when the picture is supplemented with a background story, it pervades our psyche in an even deeper manner. And that is exactly what photographer Brandon Stanton has been doing since 2010 when he started off the ‘Humans of New York’ (https://www.facebook.com/humansofnewyork) project. One man with a camera roams the streets of New York and captures not just pictures, but stories, dreams, ideas and aspirations on his lens. And when this shutterbug was asked by the UN to travel to various countries and do the same across the world, we were thrilled that India figured on his tour itinerary. As Brandon wraps up his Indian sojourn, here are the 12 most powerful images he clicked here.

1. Of Marriages – Love And Arranged

"Some people still prefer the arranged marriage, especially in the countryside where tradition is still strong. The thought is that your parents know you very well, and will make the decision based on experience and not emotion. The divorce rate with arranged marriages is lower, because both families are heavily involved and there are many people committed to making the match work. But the tradition is on the way out. It used to be that you didn't even see your wife until your wedding day, and you fell in love after your wedding, as you learned to support and care for each other. But today there's Whatsapp and Facebook, so keeping two people apart is almost impossible. 'Love marriages' are becoming much more popular than arranged marriages, and even arranged marriages involve much more interaction than they used to. Many families still choose to uphold the appearance of an arrangement. Their children will come to them and say: 'I fell in love.' And they'll say: 'OK, let us arrange it.'"

2. An Honest Living

"If you could give one piece of advice to a large group of people, what would it be?"
"If you feed your children with food earned from corruption, they will be corrupt. If you feed your children with food earned from honesty, they will be honest."
(Dharamshala, India)

3. Inside An Obese Mind

"I've been overweight all my life. But I broke up with my boyfriend last year, and things weren't going well, so it got worse and worse. I'd try to diet, but I'd eat something that I wasn't supposed to. I'd try to go to the gym, but I'd leave early. I was trying to lose weight because I felt like I needed to be a different person. But time has passed now, and I think I'm approaching weight loss with a much more positive attitude. I know that I can be happy without losing weight. Sure, I wish I could wear prettier clothes. I wish I could take a photograph without my face looking like a football. But I know that I'm not my weight. And it's hard to come to that conclusion. You really have to battle to separate your self-image from your weight. Because weight is always the first thing that somebody sees. Somebody will see you after a few years, and their first comment is about the weight you've put on. Maybe I've become a better person these last few years. Maybe I've been a great friend to someone. Maybe I've read a lot of books and become smarter. Maybe the reason I've put on weight is that I've got a great job that can be stressful and doesn't leave me time to go to the gym."

4. The Importance Of Faith

"I used to drink a bottle a day. But then I met my guru."

5. The Lesser Known Gandhis

"My father was very simple, but everyone respected him. The former president of India came to his funeral, even though we weren't a wealthy or powerful family. Everyone saw my father as a peacemaker. Whenever there was a fight, he'd put himself in the middle and beg for it to stop. Once there were two groups of men fighting, and my father ran over to break up the fight. Someone threw a stone and it accidentally hit my father in the head. He was so respected, that as soon as the stone hit him, everyone went calm."

6. Confessions Of A Refugee

"I think the great fear of every Tibetan is that our story will die out. It's been over fifty years now since Tibet lost its independence. Our monasteries have been destroyed. The Chinese language curriculum is being mandated in our schools. More and more Han Chinese are moving into Tibet-- building homes, building malls. I think now we are all starting to think that the Chinese are too powerful and that the dream of returning home is fading away. I think our mistake was that we didn't keep up with the world. We held on to the monastic tradition too tightly. We didn't embrace modern education, and so we weren't connected with the outside world. Because of that, we lost our freedom silently. I think our challenge now is to educate our children in a modern way, so hopefully they will be better at sharing our story."
(Dharamshala, India)

7. Long Live The Resistance!

"Before I went to the protest that day, I stood in front of a picture of the Dalai Lama, and I swore an oath: 'If I am arrested, I will not give the names of any of my friends.' They put me through eight months of interrogation. They burned cigarettes on my face. They made me stand in ice for four hours, until my skin froze into the ice, and then they pushed me forward. They gave me electric shocks on my tongue. They told me they were going to kill my father and mother. After eight months, I had a trial. Two guards stood next to me when I testified, and they hid electric shocks in my sleeves in case I said something they didn't like. I was sentenced to four years. Sometimes I'd get so hungry I'd eat toothpaste. And sometimes I'd get so thirsty, I'd drink my urine. When I finally got out, I weighed 39 kilograms."

8. Lessons From Buddhism

"I have a doctorate in Buddhist philosophy. Now I want to learn as many languages as possible so I can teach as many people as possible."
"What do you think is the most important thing that people can learn from Buddhism?"
"Compassion. Everyone suffers and everyone needs happiness."

9. Observation VS. Experience

"When my children are settled, I am going to retire and devote more time to my meditation. Every time you meditate, you get a little further from the world. You become more and more like the lotus, which grows in the water, but never touches the water."
"So what's the benefit of withdrawing from the world?"
"Meditation is like a glass of juice. I can describe the glass of juice to you. But you're not going to know the glass of juice until you taste it."

10. Things We Do For Love

"We practiced for about thirty minutes before he actually called my parents. I pretended to be my mom, and tried to think of all the reasons she'd object to us getting married, and he practiced his rebuttals. The actual call was a lot easier than the rehearsal."
(New Delhi, India)

11. How Patience Works

WELCOME CHINA PRESIDENT both MODI AND CHINA PRESIDENT BECOME "CHINI - CHINI BHAI BHAI." Chinese President Xi Jinping begins three-day India visit today

Chinese President Xi Jinping begins three-day India visit today.

Chinese President Xi Jinping begins three-day India visit today

Chinese President Xi Jinping will on Tuesday afternoon arrive India on three-day official visit. Jinping is the first Chinese head of state to visit India in eight years.
Jinping will be greeted by Gujarat Governor OP Kohli, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and ministers at the airport where he will also be given the Guard of Honour. He will then be taken to Grand Hyatt hotel.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who on today turned 64, will hold one-to-one talk with Jinping for almost 20 minutes.
Jinping is also scheduled to visit Sabarmati Ashram with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both the leaders will head to Sabarmati riverfront for a walk in the evening, followed by dinner. The Chinese President will leave for Delhi at 7.30 pm.
On Tuesday evening, Modi flew in to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport here on a two-day official visit to his home state Gujarat. This is the first home visit of Modi after he led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a stunning victory in the general elections.
The Prime Minister had on Tuesday said Xi's visit will mark a decisive moment not just for the India-China relationship, but also for the development of Gujarat.
He also said India is now being looked at differently by the world and the country's capabilities are being recognised. He said a new chapter will be written in the country's economic progress.
The visit of the Chinese President to India will be closely watched and analysed. As CM of Gujarat, Modi travelled to China five times, more than to any other nation, and he has been visibly impressed by China's economic success.
Officials said that China is expected to commit investments worth USD 6.5 billion to set up industrial parks in India and sign purchase agreements of over USD 3 billion with domestic companies.
During the visit, about two dozen Chinese companies are likely to sign purchasing agreements with Indian firms to buy products such as copper cathode, sea food, cotton yarn, industrial salt and polypropylene.
16 documents are likely to be signed in areas such as trade and economic development, drug administration and cooperation.
China has proposed to set up an automobile industrial park in Maharashtra and a power transmission park in Gujarat. The Chinese companies are expected to invest about USD 6.5 billion for development of these parks.
These investments and purchase agreements will help India in narrowing the ballooning trade deficit with China which has reached about USD 35 billion in 2013-14.
The bilateral trade between the countries stood at USD 65.85 billion in 2013-14. China has invested only USD 410 million during April 2000 and June 2014.

Ex Delhi Daredevil player knocked off 11 wickets in the 2014 IPL and would like to continue the similar stride in the CLT20.

3. Ambati Rayudu (Mumbai Indians)

The Mumbai Indians' middle order maestro would like to continue his fantastic form from the England series. Although he was not in the Indian test squad due to his aggressive batting style, it is his playing style that goes in his favor and also for the Mumbai Indians. He follows the footsteps of Shikhar Dhawan who also got the chance late in his career, but as we know, it's better late than never that he got the chance to play for the country. He is also one of the key players in the Mumbai Indian squad.

4. Aditya Tare (Mumbai Indians)

The opening wicket-keeper batsman from Mumbai Indians has always been the dependable guy who can hit the ball hard right from the start. He joined the IPL side in 2010 after a fantastic campaign for Mumbai in the domestic circuit. The player still awaits a national squad call but that is not likely to happen soon.

5. Akshar Patel (Kings XI Punjab)

This 20-year-old young gun who debuted for Indian national squad in the last tour to Bangladesh was benched for the entire first season with Mumbai Indians. But last year he joined Kings XI Punjab and under the guidance of their assistant coach Sanjay Bangar, he took 17 wickets in 17 games he played for Punjab.

6. Praveen Kumar (Mumbai Indians)

After having a fantastic debut against Pakistan and later being picked up for the triumphant Commonwealth Bank Series, Praveen Kumar slowly faded out from the scene. With two ordinary seasons (2008-10) with Royal Challengers Bangalore and a decent stint with King XI Punjab, he was dropped due to higher base price in 2013. Mumbai Indians picked him this season after Zaheer Khan was out due to an injury.

7. Rishi Dhawan (Kings XI Punjab)

Another fantastic all-rounder from Punjab is Rishi Dhawan. After being neglected by Kings XI Punjab, he was bought by Mumbai Indians in 2013 season. This year he came to the Punjab side and he delivered his best that landed Punjab in the finale of this year's IPL. He took 13 wickets in total.

8. Manan Vohra (Kings XI Punjab)

From the young pool of talent of Punjab comes Manan Vohra, who debuted last year. After a below average performance in the opening season, he smashed 324 in 8 matches. He smashed 67 in the finals of this year's IPL and he is one of the key players in the lineup of Kings XI Punjab.

9. Pawan Negi (Chennai Super Kings)

After two very low-profile seasons with Delhi Daredevils, Pawan Negi joined the Chennai Super Kings and played two matches with them. He was remarkable in the Delhi's domestic circuit which caught the attention of Delhi Daredevils selectors.

10. Mithun Manhas (Chennai Super Kings)

Being in the same league as cricket legends from the last decade, Mithun Manhas (34) is probably one of the old guns from the Chennai side who can fire good number of strokes. After a brief stint with Delhi Daredevils, he joined the blacklisted team Pune Warriors.  From there, he joined Chennai Super Kings which is a good addition to their side. Manhas can replace big players and score decent runs. Plus, he is also a good bowler.

Modi and his mother spent some time chatting and both were seated on simple plastic garden chairs.
The Prime Minister’s Office too tweeted: “PM Narendra Modi met his mother Hira Ba in Gandhinagar, Gujarat this morning. The Prime Minister sought the blessings of his mother.”
Later on Wednesday, Modi will welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping in Ahmedabad who is on a three-day sojourn to India.

The Prime Minister also received calls from his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe and President Pranab Mukherjee to wish him.
Mr. Abe's call was a reflection of the special bonding the two Prime Ministers enjoy.
Mr. Modi visited Japan only a fortnight back and the warmth between the two leaders was on display during their meeting.

If India Is A Secular Nation, How Did It Get The Name Hindustan? This Video Has An Unusual Explanation

Have you ever wondered how our country got the name Hindustan? To be true, India has been known by many names over the centuries but this video claims that Hindustan was actually named by Persians who mistook the river Sindhu along which our civilisation came in contact with them. It isn’t that Hindustan was named because of its Hindu inhabitants, the video further claims.
Expectedly, there has been some debate to this explanation and the creators have added a list of sources in the description of the video to support their claim. While we cannot independently verify this claim, we feel that the video does make a case for itself.
What do you think? Do you agree with the claims made by this video?
