Top 5 Biggest Career Regrets

We live in a world where there are better career opportunities and resources, freedom in terms of how we manage our career. So, theoretically speaking, there shouldn't be any career regrets. However, reality is a far cry from theory. Most of us go through the dread at the end of the weekend, staring at the calendar, thinking when it’s the right time to quit. Let’s face it, we all have made career regrets. The wise man will be the one who identifies and then reflects on them before making the next career move. And of course, we help you do the same.

1) I wish I had quit a long time ago

You might still be stuck on to an emotionally draining and unsatisfying job because the economy has limited your options and you need the money, but be very wary. The fact is that those who had actually quit their jobs to pursue what they love, almost universally wished that they had done it earlier. You will spend more time working in a job you hate, meaning more time wasted; and you can’t ever get that lost time back.

2) I wish I had focused less on money

This is actually the most common regret found across professions. Money shouldn't really be a motivating factor, especially when you can earn enough in a variety of different lines of work. It doesn't matter how much money you make when you don’t have the time to spend it and nothing meaningful to spend it on. After all a high paying but dissatisfying career can only get you so far.

3) I wish I’d started my own business

As your personal expenses sore, professionals yearn for more control over their life. One such way to get control is by starting your own business. While many people think about their start-up, only a few think they have what it takes and act accordingly. Moreover, most are confused and have no idea about where to start from. This leads to the said regret. The only way to get over the feeling is to actually do something about it. Take control, be fierce, use your resources and have faith in yourself and your talents and no one can stop you from being an entrepreneur.

4) I wish I had acted on my career hunches

Most are passive and pursue the path more travelled with least resistance. However, they later wish they’d take more control and been more proactive with their career. Waiting for appreciation from your boss or better opportunities from your fellow colleagues is perhaps the biggest folly you can ever make. Always remember no one has the power to reinvent your career but you.

5) I wish I’d given my dream a fair shot

Those who want to follow their passion often don’t take the plunge because they fear risk or failure. The feeling is legitimate, but that can’t be the reason to hold you back. Taking small steps towards your dream will only make it seem less afar. So, take baby steps as opposed to not trying at all because success comes to those who try.
