It's that time of the year! With parents showering "extra sweet" love during the festivities, the ghee-laden mithai boxes at work and the pre/post Diwali indulgences, health might become the least of your priorities during the festivals of lights (and calories). Other than the obvious damage that you might be doing to your body by binging on the unwanted calories, you will also end up being a victim to air as well as noise pollution. Here are a few ways you can stay healthy and enjoy this otherwise wonderful festival.

While gorging on all those delicacies (we aren't talking of the alcohol yet), most of us forget that we must make sure to sip on water frequently. Not only does it keep you hydrated, it also helps satiate false hunger.

Instead of buying deep-fried samosas, look for healthier options. Choose roasted, baked or barbequed options, as they will keep you fuller for longer and healthier. Go

Diwali drinking is something you can't (and wouldn't want to) avoid. But use the better of your judgement is what we say. Too much alcohol will dehydrate you, give you a hangover, and not to forget the extra pounds that it will add. Instead of indulging in ghee-laden laddoos or fattening kaju katlis, go for healthier options made at home, such as kheer, shrikhand or phirni. There are sugar-free and low-fat sweets available too. Even a trail mix of dry fruits containing dates, raisins or almonds is a good option. Just don't gorge on a kilo of them!
Burst Inhibitions, Not Crackers!

Let's make it a safe and sound Diwali for all this year by not bursting crackers, and instead get out of our way to add our bit to make this a better place to live. Light up your house with diyas instead of lighting up the house with electric bulbs that consume enormous amounts of electricity. Burst no crackers for a noise-pollution free Diwali.

Instead of loading up your gift box with fattening, sugary sweets, pack a basket of fruits. You could even pack a box of low-calorie cupcakes or a pack of organic tea bags. Also, instead of using plastic packing, go for paper bags. Your friends and relatives will bless you for many more Diwalis to come.
