CAG slams Narendra Modi's claims of coastal security

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has never missed an opportunity when it comes to reminding the Centre about the lapses in the security arrangements. But now, the Comptroller and Auditor General India (CAG) has pointed out lapses in Modi's own backyard. In a recent report that was tabled in the Gujarat Assembly on Thursday, CAG says how Modi has failed in securing the Gujarat coastline.

CAG has slammed the Modi government for having failed to implement the Coastal Security Scheme that was approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs in January 2005.

This report, exclusive with Headlines Today, points out how Modi government, has done a shoddy job of ensuring coastal security. According to CAg report, while the Centre approved setting up of 10 Coastal Police Stations, 25 Coastal Check Posts and 46 Coastal Out Posts and o provided 30 boats, vehicles and furniture/equipment, the Narendra Modi government had not taken any action to implement the remaining components from State Funds.

The report said that the locations of four Police Stations were changed for administrative convenience. It said that some locations identified for some coastal checkposts and outposts were waterlogged and therefore they were built deep inside the mainland at six places of Ahmedabad and Banaskantha districts.

The report also said that the construction of five Coastal Police stations was delayed and the concrete slabs used at other police stations were found to be of inferior quality. Out of 50 checkposts and outposts completed, 36 of them remained non-operational as police personnel were not deployed, the report said.

According to the report, the Marine Exclusive Intelligence and Investigation as envisaged in the Standard Operation Procedure was not established. The CAG report said that the boat movement token system to keep watch on fishermen/vessels was found to be ineffective while satellite-based vessels tracking and warning device system sanctioned at a cost of Rs.46.16 crore was not established.
