Pentagon sends live anthrax to nine US states and South Korea

Pentagon

The Pentagon accidentally shipped live samples of deadly anthrax to private laboratories in nine US states and bases in South Korea.
An investigating has been launched into the major lapse on part of a laboratory of the Department of Defense, reports PTI.
"There is no known risk to the general public, and there are no suspected or confirmed cases of anthrax infection in potentially exposed lab workers," said Steve Warren Pentagon spokesman.
The Department of Defense (DOD) is collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in their investigation of the inadvertent transfer of samples containing live Bacillus anthracis, also known as anthrax, from a lab in Dugway, Utah, to labs in nine States, he said.
"One sample of Anthrax was also sent to the Joint United States Forces Korea (USFK) Portal and Integrated Threat Recognition Program at Osan Air Base," Warren said.
The DoD lab was working as part of a DoD effort to develop a field-based test to identify biological threats in the environment, he said.
"Out of an abundance of caution, DoD has stopped the shipment of this material from its labs pending completion of the investigation," Warren said.

The Supreme Court will re-hear on Friday the central government's plea challenging a Delhi High Court order that said Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has no power in the posting and transfer of bureaucrats in Delhi.
The apex court vacation bench of Justices SK Sikri and UU Lalit on Thursday said they will hear the matter on Friday as Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh urged the court to hold an urgent hearing of the matter.
The Delhi High Court by its verdict had held erroneous a Home Ministry notification putting all the services under the Lieutenant Governor.
Meanwhile, Jung met Home Secretary LC Goyal on Thursday over the notification . The Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi has often accused Jung of being a BJP agent, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal last week even calling him a 'Viceroy' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a two-day special session of Delhi Assembly that concluded on Wednesday, the Home Ministry notification was slammed as illegal by the AAP government, with Rithala MLA Mahinder Goyal even tearing up a copy of it in the House.
The AAP government also moved the Delhi High Court on Thursday challenging the notification, which was called "suspect" by the same court in an earlier ruling. The court will hear the AAP petition, which also includes the appointment of IAS officer Shakuntala Gamlin as acting Chief Secretary by Jung, on Friday.
